If you're starting with Gen 4 here's what you missed...
Sofia Mizrahi was born and raised in an orphanage. Her father (Hezekiah/Kye) didn't want children and her mother (Anabelle) was afraid to tell him she was pregnant. She had intended to raise her child on her own. It wasn't until after her twin brother Stefan was born that her mother learned that she was carrying twins. In a desperate act to give at least one of her children a good life she left Sofia in the orphanage, taking Stefan with her. From the beginning Sofia spent most of her time buried in novels dreaming of a better life. She struggled to keep friends, with her closest friend Ann getting adopted and later a fire seperating her from her friends Kyler and Nikolas. It wasn't until she was 8 that she was finally reunited with her mother. Anabelle had never told Hezekiah about having twins and the revelation of her existence nearly destroyed their family. Even after her parents finally got back together and they moved to Copperdale to be a family, Sofia still struggled to believe that it was permenant. When Mathias (a boy from the orphanage and her first kiss) started to show an interest she was quickly caught up in the thrill of it, hoping that he might be the Prince Charming she's dreamt about. Her dreams were shattered when Mathias took advantage of her in an alley behind the carnaval. It's been a couple weeks since then, and she has barely come out of her room since.
Other Side Plots...
-
The Mizrahi family originated in Henford-on-Bagley and Sofia's twin brother Stefan spent a few of his younger years there in the time before Sofia came into his life. They were the happiest years of his life as it was the time before his father went to War and came back in a wheelchair and before Sofia came into their lives. Stefan also became close friends with Kyler who grew up in the orphanage with Sofia and though they spent some time apart after a fire closed the orphanage, they have recently been reunited and picked up right where they left off.
-
Sofia's current best friend Nikolas Layne is the one friend from the orphanage that she keeps in contact with and has been by her side through all her family drama. He was adopted by a family with an alcoholic father but has always been more concerned that Sofia is safe. While they did share a brief goodbye kiss once as children they see each other as no more than friends now that they're teens.

In the 1920's during the alcohol prohibition, Gilbert Hough (who married a Mizrahi) opened a Speakeasy and eventually founded the Henford Crime Ring. His son-in-law Jonathan Noble is now the leader of the Ring and was recruited to help find Sofia after Anabelle decided she wanted her daughter back. While most of the movements of the HCR are unknown it is no secret that they exist or that the Mizrahi name is attached to it.
